Finishes

Work Patina

Our work patina is not buffed or polished, showcasing a natural oxide layer with unique colors in each piece.

Imagine the head of a well-used hammer, and you’ll know what we mean!

High-Polish

A brilliant shine allows smaller facets - created my hammer blows - to catch the light, and then the eye.

THIS FINISH IS DEVELOPED BY SANDING AND BUFFING YOUR PIECE WITH POLISHING COMPOUND, AFTER REMOVING THE OXIDE LAYER THAT DISTINGUISHES THE WORK PATINA. EACH PIECE THEN UNDERGOES A CLEANSING REGIMEN, BEFORE BEING CRAFTED INTO ITS FINAL FORM.

Brushed

The milled finish brings hand-brushed texture to several designs in our collection.

this finish Creates a softer, striated polish.

Frequently Asked Questions

HOW QUICKLY Will MY ORDER SHIP?

WE HAND-CRAFT AND PACK EACH ORDER TO YOUR SPECIFIC NEEDS, but we estimate 5-7 days for most personal orders.

wholesale estimates may vary – PLEASE REACH OUT VIA EMAIL TO RECEIVE A FABRICATION ESTIMATE!

Can the finish flake or tarnish?

Because our collection is hand-crafted or cast from solid metal, there is no opportunity for the finish to flake or chip away.

Its uncoated surface will develop its own unique coloring with time, emphasizing different contours, surface textures, and hammering techniques. This oxidation process takes place whether your piece has a ‘high-polish’ or ‘work patina’ finish, and can vary with your daily routine or skin pH.

Use harsh chemicals and cleansers with caution! Some solutions can alter the metallic surface of your piece – even in the case of some homemade ‘polishing’ mixtures.

If you have any questions about maintaining a piece of our metalwork, please reach out and we’ll be happy to respond personally!

Will this turn me green?

It depends on the chemistry of your skin! While uncommon, a natural oxide layer may develop on your skin after contact with certain metals.

This is most frequently seen in copper and brass items, and can be washed away with soap.

Are chemicals used in finish or polishing?

Any ‘high-polish’ design is buffed with a polishing compound, which is removed with common dish soap during our cleaning process. Every Studebaker Metals piece arrives un-coated and without polishing agent.

The oxide finish of our pieces is the result of heating the metal, not painting or chemicals.

What does “hand-forged” really mean?

The term “forge” describes the process of hammer-manipulating a piece of metal to taper, stretch, or define its form. Whether hand-forged, hand-crafted, or cast, we try to choose our words thoughtfully.
